CHAMBER began as a roving exhibition space established in 1993 by Steve Brower and Melissa Dadourian. Its purpose is to use borrowed real estate to provide a venue for artists outside the commercial gallery circuit. Chamber was invented by artists and is funded provisionally.

The first three exhibitions were held at a 7,500 square foot space at Chambers Street and West Broadway, which had previously been a bank.

After the bank space was rented CHAMBER then moved to a new location at 89 Canal Street where site-specific shows and events were held from 1994 to 1996.

In the spring of 1996 Chamber aquired a new location at a 85 West Broadway, a space on the ground floor of the original bank space. This 1,600 square foot store front space was the location of Chamber until Spring of 1997. Six exhibitions and art events were held at this location.

CHAMBER is devoted to enacting the highest quality events through the time and energy of its participants, and the use of a non-neutral space. see:

Chamber 2 >
Included thirty-one artists and was on view from March 5-26, 1994.
The exhibition made use of the entire bank space and included installation, video, painting, photography, sculpture, and performance. Several artists were allotted whole rooms, including the bank's vault.

Chamber 3 - Amy Hauft >
"Counting to Infinity" was an installation by Amy Hauft. This exhibition took place in April, 1994.

At the conclusion of Chamber 3, the bank space was rented by the owner of the building to a theater school.

Chamber 4 - "DOUBLE DIAMONDS" >
"Double Diamonds" occured in two former jewelry stores located at 89 and 99 Canal Street.
This event featured installations by Daniel Bozhkov and Melissa Dadourian and took place in May, 1995.

Chamber 5 - Debbi Sutton >
"Family Members" was a one day installation and performance held at 89 Canal Street on April 21, 1996 by Debbi Sutton.

Chamber 6 - Chamber 11 were held at a 1,600 square foot space at 85 West Broadway.

Chamber 6 - "MOST" >
"Most" consisted of installations by Yasmina Bouziane, Tom Brumley, Lexy Funk, and Zvezdana Rogic.
The show was on view from May 3-21, 1996.

Chamber 7 - Aidas Bareikas >

Was an ambitious installation by a young Lithuanian artist, Aidas Bareikas, which was on view from September 10-28, 1996.

Chamber 8 >

Featured installation, video, painting, photography, and sculpture by fifteen new artists and was on view from October 4-28, 1996

Chamber 9 - Rachel Lowther >
Was a solo show of new sculpture by a young British artist, Rachel Lowther.
This exhibition was on view from November 8 and ran through November 28, 1996.

Chamber 10 - "123 NOTHING HAPPENED..." >
"123 NOTHING HAPPENED..." was a performance and video event curated by Melissa Dadourian.
The night of performance occured on December 13, 1996.

"As the Radio Gently Burned Away..." an exhibition of recent work by Nico Jenkins.
This exhibition was on view from January 10 through February 8, 1997.

Chamber 12 is being held at a 1,400 square foot space at 95 Canal Street.

Chamber 12 - "OUT OF OUR ELEMENT" >
"95 Canal Project: Out of our Element" is a a group exhibition inaugurating Bettina Smith and Christina Warner’s first curatorial project.
This exhibition is on view from December 9, 2003 through January 15, 2005.
